Objectives
The overall aim of this project is to help Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam cope with adverse problems related to health impacts, caused by the climate change. The Mekong region is increasingly vulnerable to climate-induced health risks due to changes in temperature, and rainfall patterns that affect the incidence of vector-borne diseases (e.g. malaria and dengue) and extreme weather events that cause injuries, deaths, and water contamination.
To address these problems this technical assistance project will build regional capacity to scale-up regional efforts on communicable disease control and related climate induced health risks such as heat related morbidity and mortality in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The impact of the technical assistance will be reduced vulnerability to climate-induced health risks, especially for vulnerable populations including the poor, migrants and ethnic minority groups in the Mekong region.
The following project outputs are expected:
1) Knowledge and understanding of the relationship between climate change and human health are improved.
2) Human resource skills in coping with climate change adaptation in the health sector are strengthened.
3) Knowledge products are shared and advocacy promoted.
The proposed project supports climate change related capacity building in adaptation. It fulfils NDF’s screening criteria and is in line with NDF’s mandate and strategy as it will contribute to poverty alleviation indirectly by reducing the vulnerability of the poor and disadvantaged groups to climate change induced diseases. The expected improvement in the beneficiaries’ health status will enhance their productivity. Although the main focus of the proposed project is on the health sector, it also seeks to establish and reinforce linkages with other sectors, such as water and sanitation, agriculture and environment.
Financing
Total project cost are estimated at EUR 4.3 million of which NDF is providing EUR 4 million.
